How to build a PC?

Updated: Nov 7, 2021

When I was saw my brother built his computer years ago, it seemed such a puzzling and daunting task, and I would just rely on him for help.

It's perfectly normal to be intimated to first since you're usually going to spent hundreds of dollars, only to worry about breaking something.

The steps below will show all the necessary setup you need, so that you feel 100% confident in what you're assembling.

*Note that some of these steps are interchangeable, so it's not required to follow the exact same procedures.

Step 1: gather your parts, including a multi-bit screwdriver, side cutters, pliers, and thermal paste in a anti-static location.

  • I highly recommend new users to get the ifixit screwdriver set.

Step 2: ensure you're static safe!

  • Turn the power supply button off and touch the PSU every so often, in order to dissipate any static.

  • Using an anti-static wrist wrap is the most optimal, but it's not required.

Step 3: bring out your motherboard

  • Begin by putting your motherboard an area will that not damage the conductors. Your motherboard box is one area you can use.

Step 4: installing your CPU

  • Begin by pulling up the lever by pushing down, and the retention plate should also get lifted up. Place the processor on the socket, and return the lever to the original position.

(video will also apply for step 5)

Step 5: apply thermal paste and install the heatsink

  • Before you put on the heat sink, put a small amount of thermal paste on the processor.

Step 6: install your RAM

  • Open the designated slots on your motherboard, and insert your RAM parallel to the motherboard. You will should hear a clicking noise when the RAM is inserted correctly.

Step 7: install your M.2 drive SSD

  • If you have another form of storage like a sata SSD, you can skip this step.

Step 8: screw your motherboard in your case

  • If your motherboard doesn't come with an I/O shield, make sure to connect it.

Step 9: start connecting your cables

  • Some of these include your front panel, USB 1, USB 3, sata cables, and etc.

Start 10: install your GPU to your designated PCIE lane

Start 11: install your power supply and all the necessary cables

  • These include your PCIE, 24 pin, CPU cables.

Start 12: install your fans

Optional step: cable manage your case

  • Using duct tape, cable ties, or velcro straps are all helpful to cable manage.

That's it! Now you learned the basic steps in building most types of computers. Although your first time assembling one might be a nervous experience, always remember to have some confidence.

If there is additional information or steps that you are missing, refer back to your motherboard manual or feel free to email me about any questions or concerns.

Good luck and have fun!
